What Should You Do If You Have a Lower Back Injury?

A lower back injury may heal on its own in a week or two, but if it doesn’t you will need medical attention. If you have back pain after an injury that lasts for two weeks or longer or doesn’t go away after taking pain medication, you should visit a chiropractor. At Holmes Chiropractic, our chiropractors have decades of experience evaluating and treating lower back pain in Monterey Park, East Los Angeles, Montebello, and Alhambra, CA. We specialize in all-natural, drug-free, nonsurgical back pain treatment.

Try Home Remedies

You can try to treat your lower back pain at home if it isn’t chronic or acute, or if your injury isn’t severe. Try these home remedies for low back pain:

  • Cold compress
  • Heating pad
  • Stretching and low-impact exercise
  • Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medication

If your pain persists after a week of trying home remedies, you should contact our chiropractors. It’s possible you have a spinal injury, herniated disc, or other serious issue.

Watch Out for Additional Symptoms

If you have certain symptoms along with back pain after sustaining an injury, you may need immediate medical attention. Our office will try to fit you in for an emergency appointment if you have any of these symptoms:

  • Acute lower back pain
  • Sharp, burning, or itching pain that radiates from your lower back and down one leg
  • Muscle weakness, fatigue, or spasms in your leg
  • A tingling or pins and needles feeling in your lower back, hips, leg, or foot
  • Difficulty walking, standing, or sitting
  • Back pain that persists when you’re lying down
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Fever
  • Red skin or swelling at the site of the injury

Visit Our Chiropractors

If your pain is persistent or keeps coming back even after rest and medication, you should visit our chiropractors for a customized treatment plan. We will assess your symptoms, complete a full physical examination, and take an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan to evaluate your injury. The goals of chiropractic care are to offer drug-free pain relief, improve function and mobility, prevent future pain, and enhance overall wellness and quality of life. We specialize in chiropractic care, massage therapy, chiropractic injury rehabilitation, workplace ergonomics, posture correction, and diet and lifestyle modification counseling.
